Alternative Cycleway route avoiding Alderley Edge A34 bypass construction
The Cheshire Cycleway route passing between Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley (crossing the A34 and along Welsh Row) is now affected by the construction of the Alderley Edge/Nether Alderley Bypass, due to finish in spring 2011. Welsh Row, which the Cheshire Cycleway route follows, is now completely closed. No pedestrian or cyclist can get though. Brook Lane will also be affected at some stages of the roadworks - either by construction traffic or closure to enable construction.
Good news for the future for any cyclists wanting to use this new road. It will have wide verges incorporating a footpath/cycleway on both sides, and crossings at the new roundabouts.
Alternative route for the Cheshire Cycleway
This is the official alternative route (see the red line on the map below). It has been changed from Richard Bullock's original suggestion.
The route should be signed this week (31st July 09) - you can e-mail the Alderley Edge works site team via the contact form on Cheshire East's Alderley Edge roadworks page for more information.
Or you can e-mail one of the engineers connected with the scheme - try Michael Shore or David Wilkinson (using the format: firstname.surname followed by the usual 'at' symbol and then cheshireeast.gov.uk).
Pass the mouse pointer over the markers to see their labels. Click on the marker to see more information.
We'll continue to update this page as we get more information. So far, the diversion is expected to be in place for 2009 and 2010.
Key:
Red line - Alternative route - official signposted diversion around roadworks
Black line - Bypass under construction
Blue line - Cheshire Cycleway

I cycled the Cheshire Cycleway yesterday and didn't see any diversion signs. I should have read this website before I set off so that I could have seen the diversion suggestions. I had to travel on busy A road into Wilmslow, but thankfully motorists gave me lots of room.

We've just discovered that our diversion map is wrong as the route was tweaked a while ago. Still trying to find out when the diversion signs will be in put in place. Should have been there at Christmas.

The diversion signs have now been designed and will be made very soon and then put in place.

Mike Shore has contacted us (30th July 09) to say that the diversion route will differ slightly from the original idea of using Fulshaw Park South to cut between the B5086 and the A34. Apparently this is a private road and it would require permission (complicated!) for use in an official diversion. So officially the diversion will go north to the roundabout junction of these two roads. We haven't cycled around Wilmslow so don't know if there is any physical/practical restriction to individuals cycling along this short cut. Let us know here.

There still seems to be no intent on putting up diversion signs, even though there was a budget set back in 2008 for them being made and erected by Jan 09. We have not been able to obtain any deadline given to the contractors, so without a deadline, we are not optimistic of ever seeing these signs in place.
We've been given a new name to chase - Andy Buckley at Cheshire East. Feel free to join us in contacting him.
Meanwhile, we've heard from CycleWilmslow that there is a new route 70 sign at the roundabout.
Let us know here if you see any more signs, any specific diversion signs, or have received any definite responses from anyone in Cheshire East.
If it's delayed much more, by the time the signs are up (if ever), the bypass will be built and they'll be redundant, so let's hope there's a budget to take the signs down again once they're not needed!

Good news! We have been told today (30 Sep 09) that all the diversion signs are now in place.
Let us know here if you notice any problems, or if the route we've mapped on this page doesn't match the signed route. Then we'll redraw the map.

Today (June 13th) we cycled from Congleton to Mobberley and beyond to look at the Cycleway diversion signs. Didn't find any! So we'll be checking with Highways to find out more. Watch this space.
