Best route between Macclesfield railway station and the Cheshire Cycleway near Bollington

Station facilities:

Staffed full-time, Macclesfield station is run by Virgin Trains. Waiting room, refreshments/newsagents, toilets. Canopies on both platforms.

Road and cycle access to one platform. Passenger-operated lift for access to other platforms.

Local facilities:

Opposite the exit to the railway station, across a car park, there are several pubs. Beyond, various roads lead uphill into the town centre where the usual range of shops and cafes can be found.

What the route is like:

The shared path from the station to the road crossing is busy with pedestrians; the short section of road is also busy with drivers being more concerned with their shopping plans than cyclists. But beyond this, the route is off road along the Middlewood Way, which is popular with pedestrians (many walking their dogs) and cyclists. Once you cross the main road onto the ex-railway line, you may encounter horseriders too.

The route is sealed (Tarmac) from the town as far as the bridge, then it is a reasonably well drained surface along the ex-railway line.
