Gawsworth Hall (one of Cheshire's Gardens of Distinction)

Gawsworth Hall, Church Lane, Gawsworth, Macclesfield, Cheshire, SK11 9RN

Tel: 01260 223456

Gawsworth village is old, beautiful and very unusual containing the glorious black and white mansion (Gawsworth Hall) and a series of rectangular ponds, a medieval rectory and St James' church. Close to the mansion there are formal plantings and lawns, beyond is what is often referred to as a medieval tilting or jousting ground, surrounded by a brick wall that was built, at great expense, in Tudor times. A tremendous amount of earth was moved to create the mounds and terraces that can be seen today. It is thought that the grounds were landscaped to stage entertainments on a huge scale to impress and flatter Queen Elizabeth 1, if she deigned to stay at the hall, but she never did favour the Fitton family. So she missed the opportunity to see the grounds flooded and victorious sea battles re-enacted.
