Macclesfield railway station

by Alec and Val Scaresbrook

Staffed full-time, Macclesfield station is run by Virgin Trains. Waiting room, refreshments, toilets. Canopies on both platforms.

On the Stoke-on-Trent-Manchester line. Virgin and Arriva Cross Country north-bound trains all stop at Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly. Virgin and Arriva Cross Country south-bound trains all stop at Stoke; some Arriva Cross Country trains stop at Congleton (every couple of hours). Northern trains also run north-bound to Manchester, stopping at most intermediate stations. A few continue south-bound to Congleton, Kidsgrove and Stoke.

The Virgin trains are usually modern Pendolinos, which means there's a bike space at one end of the train; Arriva Cross Country trains are usually modern Voyagers. Theoretically bikes requiring booking in advance, but there's usually no problem with Voyagers as the bike space is freely accessible. Pendolino's bike space is in the engine section and locked, so booking ahead and/or speaking to the station staff in advance, is essential.

Road and cycle access to one platform. Passenger-operated lift for access to other platforms.
