Mow Cop Folly
by Alec and Val Scaresbrook
Although not particularly close to the cycleway, the folly is very obvious when cycling from Hassall Green towards Congleton. It should be, because it was built in order to improve the view of the ridge from Rode Hall, near Rode Heath. It's one of the earliest examples of a folly in the country, built in 1754 for Randle Wilbraham. It was probably the latest fashion and would have provided local employment too. Although termed a folly, it did function as a summerhouse and shelter during picnics. Mow Cop is also well known in the chapel world as the birthplace of primitive methodism, on Sunday 31st May 1807.
