Alderley Edge Village
by Alec and Val Scaresbrook
This prosperous area contains many fine Victorian houses built for Manchester cotton magnates as a result of an incentive from London and North Western Railway in the 1840s to encourage use of the new line. The company offered a free rail pass, valid for 21 years between Alderley and Manchester, for anyone who built a residence with a rateable value of at least £50 within one mile of Alderley station.
