Cross o' the Moor or Greenway Cross

by Alec and Val Scaresbrook

Greenway Cross

Cross o' the Moor or Greenway Cross is a wayside cross that probably was a route marker. It's also been suggested that it marked the edge of the old forest of Macclesfield (where a forest meant a place reserved for hunting and not necessarily a place of trees). The cross is thought to be medieval and was hewn from red sandstone, which is found to the south of here. The cross consists of a rough block, with a cross cut in relief on the surface of both sides.
