Great Warford

As soon as the ban on dissenting religious groups was lifted, those who had worshipped in secret in a local farmhouse converted this ancient cottage and barn into a Baptist Chapel, in 1712. The oak frames of the early Tudor (mid-16th century) barn remain visible at the rear, although the original wattle and daub infill has been replaced with bricks. A public footpath which runs along the left-hand side of the building gives a good view - do keep to the footpath though.
The chapel originally occupied the whole building, but now only the right-hand side (as you look from the road) is used for worship. The furniture in here is original and worth a peek through the window. Even better, the keyholder may be at home (details on the noticeboard in Warford Crescent, further along the lane, on the left) and able to show you the interior. See the map below
